Stop Moving around!
If you’re walking – stop! If you’re driving, then pull over
to the side of the road and park for a few minutes in a safe place. Being
stationary means that both your phone and the network are not required to
constantly adjust to your changing position; thus making it easier to access
and maintain a strong signal.
Try Changing Your Location
If you’re in your workplace, move into a hallway or to the
other side of your office. If you’re in your home, try different rooms and see
if you can access a better reception in any of them. We know that cellular
signals fluctuate inside buildings, so you may be able to get a better
reception by trying different locations within the building.
Move Closer to a Window
Cellular signals are obstructed by building materials, but
signals may pass through glass more readily than a metal roof or concrete
walls. So, see if you can access a better reception by standing near a window
and making your call. Try another window if you don’t see much improvement. If
you can determine the location of your cell carrier’s nearest tower, move to a
window on the side of the building which faces the tower.
Move to a Higher Place
Because cell phone signal works by line-of-sight, it means
that any obstructions between you and the tower can weaken and even block the
signal. You can reduce the risk of obstructions ruining your reception by
increasing your elevation. This means that if you can go to another floor or a
higher space in your home or office building you’ll likely receive a better
reception. If you’re driving and having problems accessing a signal, drive to a
high spot and park there to attempt your phone call.
Move Outside
Sometimes it’s just easier to go outside to receive or make
a phone call. Because we know that anything located between you and the tower
can, and will, reduce your reception, it’s sometimes easier to simply exit the
building. Yes, perhaps you will have to take the elevator down 10 floors, and
if you’re driving maybe you’ll have to stop the vehicle and step outside, and
even though both of these are very inconvenient, the fact remains that, if you
must make or receive a phone call, taking these actions will immediately
resolve the problem of signal obstruction. Obviously, if you’re stuck in a
traffic jam or there’s a blizzard outside, this suggestion won’t be very
convenient – but, it does work!
Use a Mobile Service Map
Tool
There are websites, or you can download apps that will show
you the exact location of cell towers in your area for various carriers. Just
knowing where your carrier’s nearest tower is located means you can take
whatever steps necessary to reduce potential obstructions between your phone
and the tower. Use your favourite search engine, or go to your app store to
locate these tools: you’ll find there are many options to choose from.
Try a Combination of
These Tips
Of course, you’ll have a much better chance of improving
your cell reception if you can use a combination of these tips.
There Are Technological
Solutions to Improving Cell Phone Reception
If you’re still struggling to achieve a reliable signal, it
may be necessary to use a technological solution to improve your cell coverage.
Your options, depending on your specific situation, may include –
·
Wi-Fi Calling;
·
A Femtocell - also known as a Microcell;
·
A Cellular Repeater, or Cellular Signal Booster.
Each of these solutions has
their own specific advantages, and we’ll discuss these in more detail in our
next post.
